Watching Lita Albuquerque (b. 1946) reactivate Materia Prima (1979/2021/2024) in the monumental nave of the Patinoire Royale Bach, you're struck by the calm and serenity she exudes. With her feet firmly planted in the ground, dressed in an elegant jumpsuit, she repeats the same gestures with the same assurance: she sprinkles the ground with the salt that dazzles when struck by the sun's rays in the desert, and with pigments so pure that the eye picks up only the colorful vibration. She looks like a shaman in the middle of a ceremony. "What I claim is the relationship between earth and sky," she explains. Since her first interventions in California in the late 1970s, in Venice or in the Mojave Desert, she has developed an ephemeral body of work with a symbolic vocabulary - yellow for the sun, blue for the sea and sky, red for fire, cabalistic geometric shapes. "What's important to me is the gesture. The creation of the brand, the concept, the trace, the color, the geometry, the imprint it leaves in your mind; images that stay in your mind and settle in our body like an imprint."
