THOMAS DEVAUX | LOUIS VUITTON: SOLO EXHIBITION

18 - 29 October 2022

Thomas Devaux exhibited works from his project Cet Obscur Objet du Desir at the Louis Vuitton Store in Saint-Germain-des-Prés as part of the PHOTODAYS 2022, and off Paris + by Art Basel.

Thomas Devaux pursues and radicalises his critique of marketing strategies by taking a closer look at the tenuous link between different expressions of transcendence today. Resembling abstract expressionist paintings, his images photographically construct their subject in terms of a surface frontality reduced to an opaque, even narcissistic, reflection. His photographs turn the gaze in on itself in a consumed perception that has become an end in itself. The spectacle of our own vision - set up as an aim - is then consumed. Presented in counterpoint, the individuals captured as they pass through the checkout emerge spectrally from a hazy black-and-white composition that dramatises the signs of a consumerism based on capturing attention through gaudy tones.
