CARLOS CRUZ-DIEZ | CENTRE POMPIDOU MALAGA: SOLO EXHIBITION

9 September 2024

The Centre Pompidou Malaga presents Color in Motion, a solo exhibition by Carlos-Cruz Diez, running from 21 March through 9 September 2024.

Carlos Cruz-Diez (1923-2019) is one of the main exponents of optical-kinetic art. In 1960, he left Caracas (Venezuela) to settle in Paris. Within the international Op Art movement, he stands out for having turned color into his main object of research. His work is totally dedicated to highlighting color as a relative and autonomous reality. Starting in 1959, his works, based on scientific data, were divided into large series, each of which explored a particular aspect of the color phenomenon. However, there are two main optical effects that these series highlight and exalt, each in its own way. The first, chromatic induction, corresponds to all the changes in tonality and clarity that the eye experiences when it sees different colors simultaneously. The second effect, the "afterimage", corresponds to the appearance of colors that occurs after having contemplated other colors.

This exhibition, which is made up of around thirty works, offers a broad perspective of one of the most important artists of his generation, who has known how to take advantage of one of the singularities of color: its effects can only be fully manifested through devices interactive.
