FLOW: JOANA VASCONCELOS

10 September - 30 October 2021
Overview

"Drawing is a space of freedom, where thought can flow."

After the immense success of her last exhibition at the gallery, held in 2017, «De Fil(s) en Aiguille(s)» (Threads to Needles), Joana Vasconcelos returns this Autumn with a sublime collection of twenty never exhibited drawings, wonderfully evoking her personal, yet universal world.

Isn’t the main quality of great artists their ability to summon formal archetypes from a civilisation and assimilate them, differentiating and expanding our collective heritage in the process ?

How could one not see, in these colourful circles, these random abstract entanglements, a quotation of Cycladic Art and, through it, Mediterranean Art of the origins ?

Those graphic wheels are moving, they symbolise the sun’s eternal run in a very Portuguese manner. The quandragular pieces on black are a type of their own : as with her embroidery work, they are enchanting evocations of the starlit nights from her childhood tales.
